LEVERAGING RNA RESEARCH TOWARDS CAREER DEVELOPMENT
We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the mini-symposium titled "Leveraging RNA Research towards Career Development" organized by the Africa Life Science RNA Salon. The symposium aimed to foster dialogue and collaboration in the field of RNA research while emphasizing its significance in career development, especially in the areas of disease diagnostics and therapeutics. The event took place on 11th August 2023 and was hosted by Kampala International University Western Campus, Uganda. The event was proudly sponsored by the RNA Society and Lexogen Company. The symposium featured esteemed speakers and researchers who shared their insights and expertise on various aspects of RNA research and its applications. The program included the following highlights:
Welcome Address: Patrick Maduabuchi Aja, an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and a Founding Member of AfriLSc RNA Salon inaugurated the event with an insightful welcome address, setting the stage for the day's discussions.Opening Remark: Prof. Frank Kaharuza, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Kampala KIU-WC, Uganda, representing the Vice Chancellor of the University, emphasized the institution's commitment to promoting academic excellence and fostering meaningful collaborations in the field of RNA research.
“Talk 1” on RNA and Diseases: Dr.Kekinde Ross, an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and a distinguished RNA Expert from the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom, delivered an engaging presentation on the critical role of RNA in diseases, shedding light on its potential applications in disease diagnosis and treatment. He discussed several works from his research team relating to the subject of RNA and Diseases for the past decade.
Poster Pitch: Mr. Ilemobayo Victor Fasogbon from the Department of Biochemistry at KIU-WC, Uganda, presented a poster pitch titled “Evaluating RNA Aptamers’ Interactions with miR-29a Towards the Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease,” showcasing ground-breaking research proposal and preliminary feasibility study on at the intersection of RNA and neurodegenerative diseases.
“Talk 2” on RNA and ssDNA Aptamer: Revolutionizing disease Diagnostics: Mr. I.V. Fasogbon delivered an enlightening talk on the revolutionary role of ssDNA aptamers in disease diagnostics, highlighting their potential to reshape diagnostic approaches, showcasing some open projects and proposal by him and his advisors.
“Talk 3” on Women in Science: Ms. Angela MumbuaMusyoka of the Department of Biochemistry, KIU-WC, delivered an inspiring talk on the crucial role of women in advancing scientific research, promoting gender equality, and breaking barriers in the field. She shared some ground-breaking discoveries and research outputs by some women in Science with the participants, to gear the women folks toward commitment to outstanding research and innovation.
