Biography
I hold Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Master of Science (M.Sc) degrees with strong background in Nutritional and Medical Biochemistry respectively from Ebonyi State University, Nigeria. My thesis and dissertation were on Comparative Toxicological Studies of Extracts of Locally Grown Moringa oleifera Leaves and Seeds in normal wistar albino rats and Phytochemical and Proximate characterization of Talinum triangulare and It’s Softening Principle respectively.
I also obtained my Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) degree in Biochemistry from Ebonyi State University, Nigeria where I carried out a research on the effect of ethanol extract of Occimumbasilicum on transaminases activities in wistar albino rats.
I am at the rank of a reader at the Department of Biochemistry, Ebonyi State University, Nigeria. Currently, I am Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry and Nutraceuticals and Head Department of Biochemistry, Kampala International University, Uganda.
I did my DAAD Post-doc fellowship at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), Uganda with a personal reference number: 91748211. I had some training in tissue culture/cell biology and advanced bioinformatics techniques. I also have a strong aptitude for the use of advanced statistical techniques for biomedical science research. My current research area/interest is focused on the use of natural products and nutraceuticals derived from neglected and underutilized medicinal plants and vegetable oil used in traditional medicine in the management of chronic diseases such as cancer, viral and bacterial infections, arthritis and diabetes. Natural products and nutraceuticals have potentials to target deregulated miRNAs which have been proved to be ideal strategy to combat tumorigenesis.
Owing to their fewer side effects, nutraceuticals and natural products have been used as chemotherapeutic agents against various cancers. Natural products are also known modulators of dysregulated signaling pathways by downregulating the oncogenic miRNAs which play a crucial role in the development of tumorigenesis and hence maintain a fine balance of tumor suppressor miRNAs. This present research focus will help the research team to identify the key modifications of miRNAs which may lead to tumorigenesis and the chemotherapeutic potentials of natural products by targeting miRNAs and their possible mechanism of inhibition for developing an effective anti-cancer agent(s). These will go a long way to ameliorate the damaging effects on normal cells for future chemotherapeutics.
I have conducted several innovative types of research in the area of natural products and nutraceuticals, which have been published in reputable international journals. I am a member to many societies including Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (NSBMB) and Society for Experimental Biology of Nigeria (NISEB).
