Biography
Dr. Haruna Muwonge is a highly respected lecturer in the Department of Physiology at Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda. He has dedicated his career to advancing the field of physiology and molecular biology, with a particular emphasis on RNA research.
Dr. Muwonge earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University in 2008. He went on to pursue a Master of Science degree in Medical Physiology at the same institution, completing his thesis on asymptomatic coronary artery disease among diabetic patients in 2012. Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Josephine Kasolo, Dr. Muwonge expanded his expertise in RNA research and its applications in physiology.
In 2017, Dr. Muwonge obtained his PhD from the University of Bergen, where he focused on the physiological roles and regulation of exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (Epac). During his doctoral research, he delved deeper into the study of RNA molecules, investigating their regulatory functions in cellular processes related to Epac.
Throughout his career, Dr. Muwonge has published extensively in reputable journals, with more than 15 publications to his name. His research interests span across a wide range of areas, including cardiovascular disease, hepatotoxicity, and the applications of nanotechnology in medicine. A significant portion of his work is dedicated to exploring the roles of RNA molecules in these areas, with a focus on their potential as therapeutic targets and diagnostic biomarkers.
As a lecturer at Makerere University, Dr. Muwonge has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various areas of physiology, including RNA biology. He has played a significant role in the development and revision of several curriculum programs that incorporate RNA research, such as the MSc. Nanomedicine, MSc. Physiology, and Master of Science in Sports Medicine. Dr. Muwonge's commitment to education has led him to supervise numerous graduate students, many of whom have pursued research projects related to RNA biology.
Dr. Muwonge's dedication to the academic community extends beyond teaching and research. He has held various positions within the university, such as chairing committees and serving as a member of the School of Biomedical Sciences Research Ethics Committee. His involvement in the university and broader community exemplifies his passion for advancing the field of physiology and molecular biology, with a special focus on RNA research and its potential impact on human health.
